(Comment: Many a great dog ends up a shelter. We adopted our newest dog from the Gloucester Humane Society shelter in Virginia. She definitely has the potential for show dog attributes and as a therapy dog... and she will grow into them, as soon as she recovers from her kennel cough and other illnesse. Her coat is practically non-existent and what she does have is rough and harsh (it was too matted and full of ticks to save); with time, healing, and good food, she will grow a luxurious double-thick chow coat. We adopted our other dog from the Prince Georges County Maryland ASPCA. True to shelter dog legend, he has won several awards for his therapy work; he is also a USA Today 2003 'most therapeutic' dog (shockwave flash required). We had no idea he would become such a magnficent and magnaminous creature. It turns out our story is typical of the shelter dog, if it's given a chance, a loving home, training, and a job worthy of its intelligence. Shelter dogs are TOP breeds. Both of our dogs were destined for euthanasia, if they hadn't been rescued by the ASPCA and the Humane Society and fostered by people who donate their time so willingly.
