American Association of Housecall Veterinarians (AAHV)

"Pets may be traumatized by the experience of going to the vet; at the AAHV, locate a veterinarian who makes house calls for your pet. Some vets listed treat exotic pets and birds as well as cats and dogs and may provide emergency care..." [Librarians' Index to the Internet: via More New This Week]

The Librarians' Index to the Internet provides a database of valuable resources on the web. Two new resources this week include The Complete Home Medical Guide by the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and SARS Geographic Information System (GIS), which tracks cases and maps distribution of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) around the world.

Chris Pirillo's DogBlog features lots of dog photos (upload your pooch's photo in jpg there) and also links to a completely free software program, Animal Shelter Manager, which can run on Windows or  Linux:." The complete, free, administration system for animal sanctuaries and rescue shelters" has a new manual (June 5) and plenty of documentation. (I don't know anything about the program, but if it's listed prominently on Pirillo's dogblog site, it's probably very good software... try at your own risk). Animal Shelter Manager is Copyright 2000-2003, Robin Rawson-Tetley, who welcomes donations.  [Chris Pirillo]

US government will use smallpox vaccine to control Monkeypox GA The news has gone crazy about those prairie dogs, but with good reason. Thanks to stupid people who crave exotic rodents, the US government plans to use the Smallpox Vaccine (originally stockpiled against terrorists) against the Monkey Pox outbreak caused by the import of prairie dogs.

'The CDC said health care workers, veterinarians and family members who have cared for or had close contact with infected people or animals should get vaccinations. The agency also warned veterinarians and doctors to be on the lookout for the symptoms, especially in owners of prairie dogs or exotic rodents from Africa....' The good news is that MonkeyPox is not as bad as SARS, but then, the vaccine is only 85% effective...  one more reason why the first choice for a pet should include a trip to an animal shelter.
