Domains for your pet A new Web service for the pet smitten: get an internet domain name for your nonhuman companion, ie, your pet.  Some domains will probably not get licensed: forget it if your cat is named  Xanax or OxyContin. No matter, there are plenty of potential customers out there for  the service which will "register a Web site address for your dog, cat or any other non-human companion."

In the US there are an estimated 65 million dogs and 75 million cats and in the UK 7.7 million cats and 6.6 million dogs. So there's a potentially huge unexploited demographic in the highly competitive domain reselling market just waiting to be tapped. Winterizing your dog:  From the Edmondton SPCA, tips to keep your dogs healthy in winter

  • If it's too cold for you outside, it's probably too cold for your dog.
  • Putting a blanket inside a dog house will not help your dog because the blanket will easily freeze. Use straw or wood chips instead. Better yet, bring the dog inside.
  • "Outdoor water dishes are a bad idea. If you’ve ever stuck your tongue to a metal pole when you were younger then you can imagine what it is like. Please use some other material than metal for your dogs water outside. Snow is not sufficient enough to be a water source..."
  • Salt is as damaging to a dog's feet as it is to your car. Rinse the dog's paws after a walk. Remove snow clods from their feet too...
  • Add a jacket or sweater to your dog if it doesn't have a thick coat for the outdoor weather.
  • Even so-called cold-weather dogs cannot endure super cold conditions. Our chows prefer the indoors when it's below freezing. If it's below freezing, our dogs go outside with supervision and never stay outside alone.
  • Antifreeze is lethal to animals, even in very small doses. Keep it away from your pets. [Fort Saskatchewan This Week]

Mushers secret: paw protection balm It's snowing here in the Washington DC area, so I finally tested out the paw protection par excellence: Musher's secret

Musher's secret is a waxy pomade (secret ingredients are all 100% natural waxes) you coat your dogs' paws with (not their hair). It claims to prevent salt burn on dog paws in winter and against asphalt burn in summer. It will also help prevent the buildup of ice clods between the pads on their feet.  I'm glad I bought it because one of our dogs has very rough, dry pads. A dog's pads should not feel dry or rough, but should feel smooth and even. You can buy Musher's secret through just about any pet supply catalog (I've used both JB Wholesale Pet Supply and Omaha Vaccine.)
