Everyone seems to have something to say about what's wrong with calling users "users." Richard Anderson has a few thoughts, including acknowledging that the term isn't ideal, but it's what we have. I concur, until we come up with something better.

I found the quotations at the NBS "design thinking" page interesting and provocative, but didn't think they'd evoke the response that Peter describes. That doesn't mean I know quite what to make of the idea, or what to do with it. But I will keep my eyes and ears open for further discussion.
