Back to the future I'm recently reminded of why I keep this blog in the first place: to record things that I find interesting so that I can find them again some day (I rarely browse my bookmarks, after all), and only secondarily to share my thoughts with the world. With that thought in mind, I record here Luke W's notes from Aza Raskin's SxSW presentation, on a topic of some interest around the office these days--useful interfaces and the new command line: SxSW: The Death of the Desktop. Aza Raskin discussed and demoed reasons behind the Death of the Desktop at South by Southwest 2007. In particular he focused on why the application model was broken and how zooming interfaces and the Web could move us forward. . . . Designers need to learn what it is that users are capable of. . .  An Interface is the way you accomplish tasks with a product and how it responds. To the user, the interface is the product. . . Litmus test for a good interface: how long is the manual? When you set out to design an interface, write the manual first. . .  Marry GUIs with command lines, command lines with semantic understanding, and semantic understanding with services (web apps). . .
