First post in a few days; B is back in the States, and I'm in Kinsale relaxing, preparing the boat for the crossing, and waiting for strong winds to blow over. Today the winds are still a little strong, but I've a feeling that tomorrow should be better... For those interested, here are a couple of places I look at the maritime weather on the internet.
These days have been filled with reading, walking, and scrubbing the deck. They have included a potentially major disaster which I'm still in the midst of repairing...
Having this extra time on my hands, I decided to clean the teak on the outside of the boat; there isn't that much of it, but it looks gray and old and in need of a little care. I scrubbed them down with steel wool to a beautiful finish, and starting applying teak oil, which protects the wood while still allowing it to breath. Well, as I now know, steel wool gets ALL OVER the place... and then rusts. It does this is about 12 hours. So now the teaks look beautiful, and the deck is rust colored in spots... not good. I started scrubbing yesterday, and the good news is that the rust does go away. The bad news is it is incredibly slow to come off, and I've only done about 1/3 of the work in a day. I'm going to Cork today to see if I can buy some cleaning product for gel coat (the coating on the deck). I know the product exists, and I know it's going to make this work MUCH easier. Thank goodness I have the time to do this! Didn't have the heart to take a picture, it looks too aweful... but in the places where I've cleaned, the boat looks new! (phew)
