MPR carried an amazing series of audio clips called  "The Memoirs of Frank Stanton" that serves as a history of broadcast journalism.  Listen Here

One thing I didn't know is that the networks used to be required to give equal time to all canidates.  There were 16 canidates in 1952 (Vegetarian, prohibition etc.) and the equal time regulations effectively prohibited broadcast of debates.  Frank Stanton fought against this so that he could bring the Nixon - Kennedy debate to television in 1960.
