Virgin Digital Buys Shift Music Virgin Digital Buys Shift Music. This is interesting. Virgin Digital, which operates a music download service, has acquired Shift Music, an L.A.-based conversion company specializing in custom ripping jobs of consumer CD collections. The head of Shift will become head of Virgin’s digital services. Virgin appears to be taking responsibility for managing its customers’ conversion difficulties. Would that other online services think this deeply into the problem of mainstream adoption. The persistent problem with digital music reaching mainstream penetration (notwithstanding Apple’s success, digital music is stilll a niche industry) is the learning curve. Ripping a CD the likely first step to MP3 use, is still way beyond most music consumers. Putting a strong how-to element into an online service is a smart move. [The Digital Music Weblog] 9:01:14 PM

From William Blaze Interface Culture. Interface Culture might just be Steven Johnson's most important book, but at the same time its probably his least read, and deservedly so. This is a less a book that was written before its time and more of a book that was written too soon. If one could extract an algorithm that Johnson used to generate the book in 1997 and run it today the result would be markedly better. Johnson's core argument is simple, interface is important and needs to be understood. As simple as it sounds, its never quite been articulated properly, we still lack a language to properly address interface. Johnson comes the closest of anyone in this book, but ultimately he's betrayed by his examples, which are more rotted then dated. The materials to properly write this book just where not around in 1997 and it suffers. Johnson also has a problem I wish a lot more of us had, he writes too well. The prose is so efficiently polished it leaves on craving a clunky paragraph or two simply to break the pace and create a space to actually think about what he's written. Wrapping up his little breakneck ride, Johnson calls out for the creation of an interface avant garde, a subculture of radical interface designers. Since the books publication there have been numerous moves in this direction, but I'm unsure if any have actually gelled into real form. Flash designers circa 2000, skinners, game modders, they are more like microcultures of interface, never quite reaching the mass and velocity necessary to self-replicate into full fledged subcultures. The one group that has emerged is the information architect/interaction/experience designer, a set that seemingly seeks obscurity through a constant renaming process. There is no question though this is a subculture, and they tend to focus on a space Johnson quite accurately brought to the for, text as interface. But as an "interface subculture" I find them rather lacking. In Language of New Media Lev Manovich postulates that a core task of new media is the creation of interfaces for databases. And it seems to me much of what the information architects are doing is prepping the database for future interfaces. There is of course a degree of interface innovation going on, but its yet to reach any level fitting of the "avant garde". But much like the shortcomings of Interface Culture in many ways this comes from a lacking in the contemporary database, not from a lack of concepts. Manovich's book is in many ways a better starting point then Johnson's although they are quite complementary. Manovich devotes quite a lot of space to interface, but essentially stops right where Johnson starts, focusing on the screen as interface through history. Neither break very far from the screen either, interface clearly needs a dose of physical computing. And the tools for analysis of computing culture are still being built, beyond the interface and database lies algorithm (anyone know a good book here?), protocol and beyond.. Ong-Bak Muay Thai. I finally got to watch Ong-Bak yesterday. I bought the DVD online from edaymovie.com, where they had a region-free version with English captions. The story is cliché (stealing a village's divine statue will bring it drought and famine and a hero must find and return the statue, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom anyone?), but the action is superb, and that includes the hilarious tuk-tuk chase. Tony Jaa is a Jet Li in a different fighting style. Via K-1 I was already familiar with Muay Thai, and I was reminded of Buakaw Puramuk and Kaoklai Kaennorsing. Ong-Bak is that cool to watch. I hope there's a future movie with both Jet Li and Tony Jaa... The movie is not all about fists, by the way. For example, the five things I learned from this movie are: Too much of a good thing is not always good Drugs are bad Money isn't always all that Bigger isn't always better Watch out for falling elbows Aren't educative movies great? Big Blog Big blog. Grosse victoire des Nordiks ce soir f... Big blog. Grosse victoire des Nordiks ce soir face à l'Inter FC qu'on avait pas réussi à battre depuis au moins... l'automne 2003 ? On a commencé en lions avec 2 buts rapides, et on a bien complété la première demie avec une défensive hermétique et quelques bons jeux en offensive. Nos opposants ont haussé leur niveau de jeu en deuxième demie, mais on a bien tenu le coup et on a su résister autant à leurs attaques qu'à leurs débordements de frustration. Bref, victoire bien méritée de 4 à 2. Résumé des épisodes précédents : Toute la semaine : encore d'autres visites du bungalow, mais toujours pas d'offre. C'est de plus en plus mystérieux. J'ai bien hâte de connaître le dénouement de cette histoire... Lundi : match nul des Nordiks face au Zeed. Une bonne rencontre avec beaucoup de beaux jeux de passes et une excellente performance des poteaux. Un 5 à 5 fort bienvenu. Cheval ou grenouille ? J'aime bien ce genre d'illusions qui illustrent très bien le principe de coextensivité, qui découle lui-même de la subjectivité. Des individus différents perçoivent des réalités différentes, mais ces réalités occupent un seul et même espace. Elles sont donc coextensives. Les commentaires sur l'arbitrage d'un match de foot illustrent aussi très bien ce principe... ;o) Mardi : ma mémoire ne me rapporte rien de particulièrement brillant pour la journée de mardi, alors je vais en profiter pour mentionner que l'absence d'entrées au blogue ces derniers jours s'explique par le temps que j'ai mis à automatiser les procédures d'ajout de fichiers au site de distribution. Au moment d'écrire ces lignes, j'en suis au point où je parviens à ajouter environ 60 artistes et 700 fichiers en 4.5 heures, alors je suis sur la bonne voie. Évidemment, à chaque fois que j'automatise un processus, je découvre et j'élimine d'autres obstacles, et j'entrevois aussi des solutions pour automatiser d'autres processus, et le tout s'affine petit à petit. L'objectif est de 1000 fichiers en 4 heures, ce qui me permettrait d'augmenter le catalogue à un rythme satisfaisant, tout en me laissant suffisamment de temps pour m'investir dans d'autres causes. En passant, je ne l'ai pas mentionné mais les convertisseurs SATA-IDE sont arrivés et fonctionnent à merveille. Et il ne faut pas confondre Martin Deschamps et marchand d'étain. Mercredi : lever tôt pour me rendre chez Mario à 9h00 question de se rencontrer au moins une fois avant la mini-performance prévue pour le lendemain soir. Une reprise de contact agréable après un hiatus prolongé, et un répertoire qui n'était pas si loin après tout et qui est rapidement revenu à nos esprits. Mario a filmé une bonne partie de la rencontre, et je vais tâcher de publier quelques extraits dès que possible. Jeudi : mini-performance à la sauvette de Dicila : on croyait bien avoir un peu de temps pour se réchauffer et se préparer avant de monter sur scène, mais finalement on a un peu été pris de court. Le son sur scène aurait pu être mieux balancé, mais on s'en est quand même bien sortis étant données les circonstances. Mon solo pendant "Le vol des chauves-souris" me faisait peur, et je l'ai effectivement bousillé. Ça illustre bien le frippisme "Fear is preparation for failure", ou quelque chose comme ça. Bref, je sentais bien que ma préparation n'était pas adéquate, mais j'ai quand même choisi de concentrer mes énergies sur Weed, et j'ai payé le prix au moment de performer. J'ai très hâte de sentir que je peux de nouveau consacrer des énergies à la musique. Une fois la prestation terminée, je me suis rendu à Expo-Cité pour la deuxième demie du match Skywalkers-Gab's que nous avons remporté 3 à 2, surtout grâce aux exploits de Steve devant nos filets. (Tiens tiens, j'ai pensé à Fred Gagné aujourd'hui, et voilà qu'il me courriel.) Vendredi : première tentative de mise à jour "automatisée". Résultat : plusieurs heures d'efforts pour 16 nouveaux artistes, 328 nouveaux fichiers et surtout tout plein de points à améliorer. En soirée, "Mystic River" que Mario m'avait prêté/recommandé. Excellent récit, distribution imposante, j'ai bien aimé. Samedi : mise à jour prise 2 : 57 artistes et 701 fichiers en 6 heures. Encourageant. En fin de soirée, j'ai regardé "Les idiots" de Lars von Trier. Drôle de film/exercice où des gens s'amusent à jouer les "handicapés mentaux" dans toutes sortes de contextes, question de retrouver l'idiot en eux. J'ai trouvé le tout inégal, avec certains moments forts, et d'autres plutôt insignifiants/gratuits. Dimanche : mise à jour prise 3 : 47 artistes et 603 fichiers en 5 heures. Un peu mieux. Incendie mortel à Rivière-du-Loup, Une communauté sous le choc : « C'est le sujet de l'heure dans la communauté. C'est très triste. » Comme les quelque 20 000 citoyens de la municipalité, le maire de Rivière-du-Loup, Jean D'Amours, était encore sous le choc, hier, au lendemain de l'incendie qui a coûté la vie à trois personnes. La perte est d'autant plus grande, ajoute M. D'Amours, que deux des trois victimes, un jeune homme de 23 ans et son amie âgée de 17 ans, travaillaient à l'épicerie du coin. « Dans une ville comme ici, le supermarché est central. Tout le monde avait des contacts avec eux. » Tout indique que la troisième personne décédée est la mère du jeune homme, une femme de 46 ans. Pour l'instant, la Sûreté du Québec à qui l'enquête a été confiée attend toujours les résultats des autopsies avant d'identifier formellement les victimes.
