Voting Against Bush's Plan - ResponsibleWealth.org
Dear Friends of Economic Justice,
Tomorrow, Tuesday, February 8th, members of United for a Fair Economy and Responsible Wealth will visit 100 Congressional offices in Washington, DC making the case for why repealing the estate tax, and granting a $1 trillion tax cut to the nation's wealthiest 1%, is bad for the economy and for society.
We're asking you to be a part of this lobby day by taking five minutes to call the office of your Representative and your Senators. Let's light up the phones with a message of economic fairness. It's easy to make your voice heard:
1. All Congressional offices can be reached via the Congressional switchboard 202-224-3121.
2. Our message is simple: "No new tax cuts for millionaires." Central to this message is preserving the federal estate tax. Our estate tax message is: "Mend it, don't end it." Most estate tax reform proposals call for raising the personal exemption to between $2 and $3.5 million ($4-$7 million for married couples). We support those reforms. When calling Senate offices, you should encourage them to vote against S.7, a bill that would repeal the estate tax and make the rest of the President's tax cuts permanent.
3. If you are someone who will have to pay the estate tax, and yet support it, please let them know. There are now more than 2,100 millionaires and billionaires - those who would have to pay the estate tax - who have signed our Call to Preserve the Estate Tax.
4. If you are a farmer or own a family business, your voices are especially important, as the White House has tried to convince the public that farmers and small business people suffer because of the estate tax. In fact, the National Farmers Union, a large organization of family farmers, opposes estate tax repeal and has several of their state presidents in DC lobbying with us.
5. No matter what your story and situation, it is important that you call, even if you know your legislator opposes repeal. Last year we heard from several Congressional offices that no one had ever visited them who supported the estate tax. You can be sure that the estate tax opponents send delegations all the time. Legislators who vote for economic fairness need to be able to say, "I've been hearing from a lot of folks who support the estate tax."
6. Send Lee Farris, our estate tax organizer, a quick email letting her know you made the call. It would also help to know if you received any substantive response. Lee can be reached at: lfarris@faireconomy.org.
The President has made clear his intent to make all of his tax cuts permanent, and repealing the estate tax remains at the top of the list. If the estate tax is repealed, the vast inheritance of the children of the wealthiest 1% will pass to them untaxed, but the inheritance of all our children will be a staggering national debt that will constrict the opportunities of generations to come. Let's not replace the estate tax with a "birth tax" on our children, let's instead be responsible, tax fairly, and leave our children a legacy of hope.
Thank you for doing your part and making the call!
For a fairer economy,
The United for a Fair Economy and Responsible Wealth team
