Looking at Satellite Radio
Satellite Radio Brings In Content And Customers... But Can It Make Money?. New year, same questions. Sattelite radio has been getting a lot of attention lately. The two players, Sirius and XM, have been signing lots of massive content deals and distribution deals, leading to plenty of new customers. However, the big question remains: can they actually make money? It's the same question that's been asked before. Both companies are losing a ton of money, and its not clear that the big dollars to content providers is being made up. Yes, new subscribers are signing up -- but it may not be enough to overcome both the cost of the content, and the expense of launching and maintaining satellites. Is this another case of a cool offering, but a weak business model? [unmediated]

Paint Tubes. From the book Color: A Natural History of the Palette:
Jean Renoir once told his son that without oil paint in tubes there would have been no Cezanne, no Monet, no Sisley or Pissarro.
Tin tubes containing oil paint were invented in 1842 and made it possible to take the canvas outside one's studio. The medium of painting became portable and changed radically - Impressionism was born.

This reminds me of the Aboriginal idea that everything has to be dreamed to exist at all. Technology creates new possibilities for art, which in turn visualizes/creates a new dream, which in turn helps people look at the world in a different or new way. The centerpiece of that sentence is art. Art informs society. Art guides us to new ways of experiencing our world. [Ottmar Liebert]

Podcasting Televise - Smile MP3
Televise.

Televise is fronted by ex-Slowdive member (drummer) Simon Scott. Televise has that shoegazer/spacerock sound that you know I love. hell the band started after writing an imaginary soundtrack to NASA’s space exploration videos. They have a three song EP coming out this April. I cannot wait to gooble it up and introduce it to the rest of my shoegaze collection.

EOG Reports From Utrecht
Pea Soup and Trappist Beer.

Greetings from Utrecht. I'm killing some time here in an internet cafe while waiting to check in to my hotel. Other than the half-inch of snow that fell last night, it's been an uneventful trip. I spent a leisurely afternoon strolling around Amsterdam's flower market yesterday, then had dinner at my fave Indonesian resto, Bojo.

I picked up my rental car at the airport this morning and drove out to my hotel in the tiny village of Harmelen. Since there's absolutely nothing to do there, I drove back to Utrecht and wandered along the Oude Gracht, stopping at the cathedral and the convent museum, where I ogled many a holy relic of bygone days.

I ate a simple lunch of pea soup and bread at a very cool old "brown cafe" called the Ledig Erf. I washed it down with a couple of Trappist dubbelbocks. I could've hung out there all day, but figured I better cool it if I wanted to be able to walk out instead of being carried.

Guess it's time to head out into the boondocks and check in. My students are all staying at the same hotel, so at least I'll have some good company for dinner.

Tot ziens!
