Squirrel Fishing is the funniest damn thing I've seen in a long time. . .(via Instapundit)

(Why I link to things from Instapundit, I'll never know. . .God knows they don't need the traffic. . .and I lose sleep at night worrying that one of the three readers I have will be the proverbial straw that broke the server's back for the fortunate person suffering from an Instalanche)

This article is an interesting take on weblog traffic in general and has reasons why Instapundit will always be the most popular blog and An Exeriment in Scotch will continue to languish somewhere in the cellar of the blogosphere. . .

First of all, power law theory is an interesting stat that I hadn't heard of but that makes logical sense. . .I know that when I came to blogging, it was through the big blogs, and I link to several on a regular basis. . .I do not link to the person who most recently started a blog because it is highly unlikely that I will ever find it. . .the blogs people read are not based on chance or random luck for the most part, they are based on what other bloggers read or what they read before having a blog of their own. . .

Secondly, because of how power laws work, I can never hope to be above average in readership, and neither can you really because 66% of all blogs fall below average readership because of the skewing attributed to the top blogs. . .I just want to claw my way up to middle-management. . .

This part has to piss Dave Winer off

At the head will be webloggers who join the mainstream media (a phrase which seems to mean "media we've gotten used to.")

since he's always on his soap box with martyr-like zeal raging against big media. . .or maybe he'll like being big media, then he can have it his way. . .I hope he gets there regardless, just to watch it unfold. . .

The tail end of the blogosphere doesn't sound like much fun either really:

Meanwhile, the long tail of weblogs with few readers will become conversational. In a world where most bloggers get below average traffic, audience size can't be the only metric for success. LiveJournal had this figured out years ago, by assuming that people would be writing for their friends, rather than some impersonal audience. Publishing an essay and having 3 random people read it is a recipe for disappointment, but publishing an account of your Saturday night and having your 3 closest friends read it feels like a conversation, especially if they follow up with their own accounts.

These are too much like online journals which tend to do two things: share way too much information and bore the readers to tears.

However, his last type are the kind of blogs that I tend to read and enjoy most. . .not really a true link heavy blog, not really an online journal either but more of a combination, the Blogging Classic (his term, not mine). And that's kind of what I strive for this blog to be. . .I want to be Blogging Classic, I want to have Old Skool blogging goodness. . .

More ridiculous talk about reinstating the draft. . .they even admit that it's purely a political ploy. . .the Pentagon hates the idea because people who volunteer make better soldiers, regardless of the reasons for signing up. . .once again, people who are in the armed forces have to know that there is a very real chance that they could be called into battle at any time. . .and many of them do it for the excitement, as much for any economic or educational gain. . .and as far as minorites having getting the short end of the stick, many minorities now sign up for skill based type activities while middle class whites are the ones who sign up for combat type activities. . .overall, the draft is a ridiculous political ploy that is pretty much sickening as far as I'm concerned. . .

9.3 miles this morning (one loop around White Rock Lake) and felt pretty strong considering the soccer tournament yesterday. . .knees are a little achy but not can't walk on them achy. . .82 minutes so just under 9 minute miles. . .training seems to be on track as far as I can tell. . .14 weeks until San Diego. . .
