So I'm listening to NPR yesterday morning and one of the big stories on Morning Edition is one dealing with Christian fundamentalists who are unhappy that the Bush administration is trying to get Israel to give up land to the Palestinians in exchange for peace. You can listen to it here. The thing that makes this story interesting is the reason why the Xtian fundies ticked off. They believe that Jesus can't come back until the prophecies of the Old Testament come true and that involves Israel (the Jews) having control of the land from the river of Egypt to the river of the Euphrates if I remember correctly. So let me get this straight: Xtian fundies don't want the Jews to give up land for peace so that Jesus will come back and save them? I can't imagine Jesus being too happy when he gets back, knowing that some really freaky fundamentalists would rather have the Jews and the Palestinians killing each other just to fulfill a prophecy so that the fundies could go to heaven.
It never ceases to amaze me the levels of idiocy that extremism of any kind causes in people. To actively campaign against a peaceful resolution in the Middle East just so that your strict interpretation of a 5000 year old story book can come true is one of the most asinine things I've ever heard coming from the Christian right. And that's saying something. |
