I am half Chinese and half Japanese. My father grew up in communist China during the late 1940's and early 1950's. He still has his little red book of rules from Chairman Mao.
When my father was 18 he managed to sneak out of China into HongKong. At 19 he learned English and went to Australia to go to the University of Perth. Later he would try to immigrate to the U.S.A but he was denied because he "came from China".
So we ended up in Canada because the immigration policies were more open. Canada was accepting of people wherever they may have come from.
Reading the Maclean's poll makes me angry in a way that I don't know to articulate. I would like to believe that as a country - Canada is a kinder society - a more tolerant society than the USA.
This holiday - think. Stop succumbing to the fear mongering on the televsion and use your brain. Find an alternative point of view and question your own beliefs.
