Remote Blogging With Radio and GoToMyPC

I'm sitting at my laptop, typing away in the Radio editor window on my desktop computer via GoToMyPC.com. I wanted to deploy the entire Radio app on my laptop using XXCOPY just like Jon Udell does. But it didn't work, again. I did get closer this time though. It's a new laptop -- used, actually -- just like the one I've carried for the last two years. I was setting it all up just prior to leaving for this trip and there was some general wonkiness in several of the apps I installed.

I think the culprit was a little corruptivity that crept into my WiFi connection to my host computer -- I had a few yellow bars and timeouts and such -- since I was actually installing things across the local network. I ended up reinstalling a couple of apps last night, cleaning up a couple of snafus, and re-running SP3 for W2K after all was said and done. Everything seems much happier now, but I don't have enough bandwidth to try and copy all the Radio stuff at this distance. It'll have to wait until I get home.

So this GoToMyPC connection works ok, certainly better than mail-to-weblog, but I don't know if it's better than Radio's built-in remote access. GoToMyPC has improved my remote computing. I can literally get to anything on my host computer if I need to do so.

But I just spent two weeks without being able to get a remote connection. After about four rounds of e-mail with tech support we finally determined the problem was their new version 3.0 software broke on my machine. I had to go back to the previous release. I don't want to be too hard on them, but I expect a little better service than that.

Mouse movements seem to be far slower to activate on the host machine than keyboard commands. And there are times of day -- mostly prime business hours -- when it takes forever to do anything at all on the host. As I said, far better than nothing, but not an optimum solution for Radio.

So I may go back to using Radio's remote access. I can't access my Kit News Aggregator page when I do this. (Mark Paschal has mentioned a couple ways I might make it work. I just seem to lack the motivation to dig into it.) And I haven't tested to see if the myRadio News Aggregator is hindered the same way. (I should.) The biggest issue is I'll be forced to deal with my dynamic IP address, now that I've dropped the $15/month static IP service from Earthlink.

I have to figure that one out some other time.
