Dynamic DNS and DirectUpdate

A quick note about my experience with DynamicDNS. As noted earlier, I took a look at DynamicDNS.org after a post by John Robb, but I didn't know if it would actually work to save me the $15/mo static IP fee I was paying to Earthlink.

Last month I had my static IP service discontinued and it ended as of 10/14. For some reason my DSL service goes offline once or twice a week and my D-Link DI614+ router has to be rebooted to get things going aagain. The first time I rebooted after 10/14 I had a new IP address and an opportunity to experiment.

I found the DirectUpdate client for Windows on the DynamicDNS site. Install was straightforward, setup fairly simple, and this dynamic addressing stuff really works. DirectUpdate reads the IP address at the router, looks for changes from the IP address it has stored, and when it sees a change it logs into my DynDNS.org account and updates the IP.

I tested it the other night with a successful remote login to my Radio server machine. I went to www.mydomain.dyndns.org:5335 and got right to the Remote Login authentication page. Very nice. The DynDNS service is free for basic accounts with fees for advanced DNS services. The DirectUpdate software is shareware with a $15 registration fee.

It's too soon to know if there are any long-term issues or conflicts, but it seems to work pretty well for now. Tentatively recommended.
