Computing Woes

Weblog entries will be a bit slow for a few days whilst I wrangle with the continuing saga of screwn hard drives and new hardware. There seems to be no way to get the data off the mortally-wounded boot drive in my Micron PC, except to get the new computer running and put the damaged drive in it as a slave unit. It's a long and tortuous tale but be warned -- using NTFS on your boot partition means you can't boot from a floppy and get to your data.

I'm amazed at how stupid software companies can be. No rational user would expect that using the highly touted, ultra-reliable, high-performance NT File System would mean you couldn't get to your data. And no piece of official documentation I've seen anywhere makes this point, at least not in English that a normal user would understand.

I'll accept my share of abuse for stupid computing tricks, but the OS is not supposed to make it worse. I hate computers.
