PRICE — The first case in 11 years of a bear attacking a camper in Utah happened July 7, at 6:15 a.m., when a black bear wandered into a campsite along the Green River in Desolation Canyon in east-central Utah.

The camp was occupied by students and instructors of the Outdoor Leadership School in Jensen, Utah. All of the campers were sleeping in the open, in a circular pattern with their feet at the center of the circle, when the bear attacked.

The bear grabbed 18-year-old Nick Greez of Oregon by the head and neck and tried to drag him from his sleeping bag. Nick's screams awakened the others, who came to his rescue and chased the bear away.

After administering first aid, the group floated Greez from the Desolation Canyon area to the town of Green River. Greez was then taken to the Castle View Hospital in Price, where he was treated for puncture wounds and lacerations before being released.

Saturday, August 2, 11 AM - 3 PM
Utah State Capitol Building, First Floor

Utah State CapitolUtah Heritage Foundation, Capitol Preservation Board and Utah First Lady Jacalyn S. Leavitt are hosting the second annual Capitol Discovery Day on Saturday, August 2, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. You are invited to join in exploring the history and architecture of the Utah State Capitol and the project that will preserve it for future generations.

Capitol Discovery Day will offer a variety of hands-on activities, tours, and presentations to engage everyone in the family. Utah First Lady Jacalyn S. Leavitt will be on hand to greet attendees and share her enthusiasm for the Utah Capitol. Capitol guides will lead special Saturday tours of the building on the hour at 11:00, 12:00, 1:00, and 2:00. From the back of the Capitol you'll have a great view of the new East and West Extension buildings. Currently under construction, these buildings follow architect Richard Kletting's original site plan for Capitol Hill.

Kids (and the young at heart) will enjoy trying architectural crafts reflecting the skills used to build the Capitol nearly 90 years ago, such as gold leafing, creating murals, and constructing a dome. In addition, experts in traditional building trades will be on hand to demonstrate their crafts.

Kids can also use their best detective skills to answer the questions on the Capitol Clues treasure hunt. Every child who completes the treasure hunt will win a small goody-bag of school supplies.

Come learn about the Capitol Master Plan and restoration project from Capitol Preservation Board Executive Director, Capitol Architect David Hart. During Mr. Hart's presentations at 11:30 and 1:30, you'll see computer-generated models of how the Capitol building will perform in an earthquake both with and without seismic base isolators. Throughout the day, you can explore an informative panel display explaining the restoration plans.

Capitol Discovery Day is free and open to the public. The event will take place on the first floor of the capitol building. Capitol Discovery Day is made possible by a generous grant from the George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation and funds from the Salt Lake County Zoo, Arts, and Parks Program.
