SALT LAKE CITY -The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) will start a pavement preservation project on State St. between 9000 S. and 6600 S. on Tuesday, July 29; the project will continue through early-November.

Construction crews will work seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will maintain at least one lane of traffic in each direction at all times. There will be no lane restrictions during commute times in peak directions. Occasionally, business access may be temporarily restricted while crews repave the roadway directly in front of each driveway.

The project will include grinding the existing road surface and placing a new pavement overlay to prolong the life of the road. Crews will begin at 9000 S. and complete sections of both sides of the road while moving in the northbound direction.

Motorists are advised to visit www.commuterlink.utah.gov and to call 511, Utah's free Travel Information Line, to find the latest construction and road condition updates.

UDOT recommends motorists reduce speeds and use caution when driving through work zones. Work schedules are subject to change due to inclement weather, equipment problems or emergency situations.

Construction for the new Utah State Archives facility which will house the division's administration, patron services, records analysis, and micrographics sections, will begin with a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at 2:00 p.m.

The two-story structure is being erected adjacent to the historic Rio Grande Depot, home of the Division of State History since 1980. Using a design and build concept, construction of the archives building is scheduled to be completed in March 2004. Project plans also call for the divisions of State Archives and State History to share a common reading room in the remodeled south wing of the depot. Offsite storage of temporary records housed at the Decker Lake records center in West Valley City will continue.

Construction of the new archives building and Rio Grande Depot renovation project is being managed by Okland Construction, general contractor. Cooper Roberts Simonsen Architecture of Salt Lake City is the facility designer.

The aging building currently occupied by the Division of Archives, constructed in 1939 as the State Road Test Building, is scheduled for demolition in May 2004 as part of the ongoing Capitol restoration project. An $8 million bond for a State Archives building was included in the $65 million bonding bill for new projects approved by the Utah State Legislature in March.
