Today Gov. Olene Walker awarded UDOT’s Traffic Management Division the State of Utah "Quality Service Award" for its efforts in keeping Utah’s transportation system working smoothly.
"These employees labor day and night to improve safety and to maintain free flowing traffic," Walker said. "From monitoring traffic cameras to coordinating signals, UDOT’s employees work behind the scenes to get you to your destination as efficiently as possible."
UDOT’s Traffic Management Division helps approximately 500,000 motorists get to their destinations each day by:
- Updating and maintaining the 511-travel information phone line and the CommuterLink Web site.
- Monitoring 230 CommuterLink traffic cameras.
- Answering more than 50,000 phone calls each year from the traveling public.
- Using ramp meters and electronic roadway signs to help motorists avoid congested areas.
- Providing information to the Department of Public Safety to assist in managing more than 6,000 traffic incidents a year.
- Managing more than 600 traffic signals.
The division also improved traffic flow along the Wasatch Front by 15 percent during 2003 despite an increase in traffic volumes.
The "Quality Service Award" recognizes groups within state agencies that are creating "customer driven government." The key to the award is a long-term commitment to excellence in customer service by providing services to the public in a faster, better and more cost-effective manner.
