"What's up with Mac OS X Java and QuickTime?" is an O'Reilly column by Chris Anderson that talks about why apps written for use with QuickTime for Java broke with Apple's new Java v1.4.1 for Mac OS X.
I'm not sure if this affects any Java-based VR players or not. I would guess not, since the point of most Java players is to provide a playback environment independent of presence of QuickTime.

VRlog provides news, developments and analysis of the virtual reality (VR) world from a nature photographer's perspective. Since I am not connected to or funded by any VR vendor, I intend to objectively appraise what's going on, and the direction VR is headed in. -- erik goetze
