This view of Broken Top and the South Sister (click to see the bigger picture) were but one of many incredible views I was lucky to see when the weather co-operated last weekend for snow activities near Bend. Saturday the area was blanketed with fresh powder of the kind you often see in Utah. The trees became incredible ice sculptures. Mt. Bachelor had a 120" base. Sunday the sun came out and the top photo shows Broken Top and South Sister completely blanketed in snow. What you can't see in the photo is how many miles I had to break the trail to get to the vista point. The second photo shows what the "trail" looked like as I came upon it -- just the occasional trail marker on a tree to guide the way. There were stretches where my snowshoes would sink in a couple feet on each step. The 25 pound pack with photo gear, layers, etc. didn't help either. Monday the snow resumed at an even lower altitude. I shot a few panoramas each day. All in all, a great trip.

Zeiss officially introduces lenses for Nikon F-mount: "Zeiss has officially pulled back the curtains on a new series of lenses for Nikon film and digital SLR cameras. As revealed when news of the Zeiss 'ZF' line leaked in mid-December 2005, the first two F-mount manual-focus lenses are a Planar 50mm f/1.4 and Planar 85mm f/1.4, with more to come later this year. The German company has also announced Zeiss ZS, lenses that are identical to the new ZF models except for the mount, which is the older M-42 screw type. The company envisions this as a way for Canon users to take advantage of the new lenses, since 'there are M-42 adapters available for any SLR bayonet mounts, including Canon EOS and FD' notes the latest issue of Zeiss' Camera Lens News newsletter."

Purpose
VRlog provides news, developments and analysis of the virtual reality (VR) world from a nature photographer's perspective. Since I am not connected to or funded by any VR vendor, I intend to objectively appraise what's going on, and the direction VR is headed in. -- erik goetze
