Comics in libraries:  The Daily Herald, a Suburban Chicago newspaper, has this story about comics in libraries.  Also, this year at the ALA Annual Conference there was a YALSA preconference on graphic novels and several sessions on comics and young adults.  Also, the State University of New York at Buffalo's Department of Library and Information Studies uses this web site in support of a course, entitled "Resources and Services for Young Adults" (LIS 535).

Virtual Reference Desk Conference:

Virtual Reference Desk (VRD) Conference, "Charting the Course for Reference: Toward a Preferred Future" will be held in Chicago from Nov. 10-13.  This year's theme focuses on  planning and direction based on experience, research or trend analyses.

Last year several librarians from CLS member libraries attended the conference, whose theme was "Setting Standards and Making It Real," in Orlando, FL.  They came back with really great ideas that enabled CLS to put together a more local follow-up in the spring (March 1, 2002), entitled "Electronic Reference Tools Symposium."

SALT Forum:

SALT Forum submits multimodal spec to W3C. Submission should help put to rest danger of competing standards [InfoWorld: Top News]

We are one step closer to convergence.   See this article in Technology Review, entitled "Talk to the Hand(held)," which explains how these tags enable voice activated handheld devices.

Here's another article on using blogs as a knowldge management tool ( k-logs).

Law Firms embrace blogs? - well sort of, I guess.  This firm with offices in New York and D.C., with its blue-ribbon clientele has a quasi-blog page called "new on the web" and it links to my blogroll, as well as to the LitiGator's blog.  Looks like a pretty interesting place to practice law.  Maybe you law students should check it out. [Ernie the Attorney]

These are great law resource links!  I wonder, have any Chicago law firms started experimenting with blogging?

Grantseekers Toolbox: Laura Svendsen, Communications Coordinator at the Donors Forum of Chicago, announced recently a new online tool for grant seekers.  Its called the Grantseekers Toolbox and was launched by the Donors Forum of Chicago Library at http://www.donorsforum.org/resource/gstoolbox1.html.    According to her announcement, the "toolbox walks users through an easy, step-by-step process for seeking funds, offering skill-building tools and resources along the way.  Topics covered include:

-- types of support and fundamentals of fundraising;
-- positioning a nonprofit organization and its projects to get funded;
-- the major types of funding and how to diversify revenue;
-- identifying donors and building a prospect list; and
-- approaching donors and preparing proposals.

In addition, the toolbox includes links to classes and other tools, a pop-up dictionary, and a downloadable, electronic common grant application -- accepted at over 40 Chicago-area foundations and corporations -- that can streamline the grant writing process."

This is one of the many great projects made possible via funding by the Illinois State Library, a Division of the Office of Secretary of State, using the federal Library Services and Technology Act.
