-- Comment() GarageBand and CC: "So Apple released this amazing new part of iLife, GarageBand. With it, you can make great music. (Well, I don't know about you, but I know Willem will make great music with it.) Anyway, one missing piece has been a simple way to know what content you're free to mix and remix within your GarageBand app. MacBand has now solved that problem. They've got a great archive of music by genre -- all marked with Creative Commons licenses." [Lessig Blog]

Do cellular automata explain life, universe, and ...? -- Comment() Wolfram's New Kind of Science Now Online: "When Stephen Wolfram of Mathematica fame self-published A New Kind of Science in 2002, he raised the suspicions of many in scientific communities that he was taking advantage of a lot of other people's work for his sole financial gain and that he was going against the open nature of academia by using restrictive copyright. Yesterday, Wolfram and company released the entire contents of NKS for free on the Web (short registration required)." Nice! I wrote a review of NKS when it appeared. (The review is available in Finnish.) I was involved with cellular automata in some years ago, and this topic still interests me. Wolfram's book got mixed reviews, to say the least, and has not had such impact as Wolfram perhaps was expecting.
