The guide for DNA Microarray Data Analysis published by CSC, Finland has been popular ever since it appeared on the net in PDF format. I just learned from a colleague that although many publishers recently brought out guides for microarray data analysis, this freely available guide does not lose in comparison.

I just found a nice commentary of Wiio's laws, written by Jukka Korpela: "Wiio's laws are humoristically formulated serious observations about how human communication usually fails except by accident. This document comments on the applicability and consequences of the laws, especially as regards to communication on the Internet."

I realized that now I receive on the average 100 junk mail messages per day. This is the average for the last seven days, and the amount is rising. Unfortunately every once in a while a legitimate message gets classified as junk, but I don't have the stamina to go manually through all the message in the junk mail folder.

Peter Norby has now available a list of things that the "Setup Assistant" fails to copy over from your existing Mac.

[Item Permalink] Using a thesaurus for writing -- Comment()
Recently I have started to use a Finnish thesaurus for writing. Previously this felt like cheating: looking for words which you didn't really remember. Now it feels like treasure-hunting. There are a lot of words which are seldom used and thus fresh, and these give power to writing. I used the thesaurus for writing my net column on developing IT products for the intoxicated (in Finnish, Tietotekniikkatuotteita päihtyneille). I used a lot of synonyms for the word drunk, and these fit nicely to the text.
