My net column on dating on the net is now available (in Finnish, Nettilempi ei ole nörttien yksinoikeus). There has been some discussion in Finland about people who meet on the net and later start dating, and even get married later on. But net dating is not for nerds only, today it is becoming more and more commonplace.

Buying and maintaining Linux clusters in partnership -- Comment()
HP grid system for materials research use - system based on Linux PC clusters: "Seven universities in partnership with the Finnish IT center for science CSC, owned by the Ministry of Education, are to order eight cluster devices from HP. |...] The project [builds] a computer network which will be physically situated in a number of locations, yet by means of the grid technology it will be in shared use throughout the grid. The equipment will be widely used serving academic research in Finland. The sale is worth approximately 680,000 euros." This project was challenging and motivating for us at CSC. It is nice to be involved is such a novel project. We can now start to test our ideas in Linux clusters and grid computing. I think the idea of joint procurement of computing system is becoming more popular. The task of benchmarking, configuring and negotiating a cluster puchase has to be done right, if you want the best performance and realiability that is available.
