Book Reviews
-- Comment() Mac crowd bashes Windows: "The Nova Mac-fest was a cross between a trade show and a grass-roots political rally. Everyone was united by the belief that life is too short to waste time and energy dealing with Microsoft products. In addition to celebrating Macs, the attendees promoted Linux, an open source operating system, as an alternative to Windows."

Google focused on research -- Comment() Google Scholar: "Google has launched a new beta service -- Google Scholar -- that is aimed at digging into the "hidden" assets of the web. Academic and professional papers, many if not most in pdf format, along with cited books and web resources are what you'll find in a scholarly search." [Frank Patrick's Focused Performance Blog]

-- Comment() Author of Linux Patent Study Contradicts Ballmer: "Open source faces no more, if not less, legal risk than proprietary software. The market needs to understand that the study Microsoft is citing actually proves the opposite of what they claim it does." This happens more and more. A study makes a point, but someone turns the result to their own purposes. Few people bother to check what was really said. The reality is created by the biggest advertising budget.

-- Comment() Worm Exploit Distributed by Advertising Network: "Internet advertising provider, Falk AG, was compromised by the BOFRA exploit yesterday. The Falk AG service has been suspended by The Register and a statement from Falk AG is due on Monday. The upshot is that if you visited the Register yesterday morning and use IE as your browser, then you probably need to run a full virus scan with up to date data files." This is getting interesting - perhaps network-tailored viruses will be the next trend. An advertising network can spread viruses rapidly to start a wide-ranging infection.
