On Collaboration Spaces

Back in the mid-90's whilst working on a Lotus Notes project at the IBM Watson Labs, I had encountered Michael Schrage's book 'No More Teams'. It was an eye-opener, that is much more applicable today. The book was well received by software developers and other 'creative' firms.

Some quotes from an interview with Michael Schrage:

The issue in collaboration is not just creative individuals, but creative relationships.

You cannot create shared understandings without shared space. That is the real challenge.

The issue is not, Which technology do we choose? The issue is, What kinds of commitments are we making to shared spaces? That should be the overarching driver. The network is merely a medium of support. Here’s the fundamental shift that is occurring with groupware: We are moving from using technology to structure data and information to structuring interactions and relationships among people.
