At least they kept the trains running. Two notes from Bill Cobey who presented his talk A Christian Citizen to my son's school yesterday morning. My reactions in italics. School Vouchers - "Against them. With money will eventually come control." Right on there.
Economy - "Need to reform state government and make NC more business friendly...The governor has to be the state's best salesman." Hmmm...loaded concept there.
Mr. Cobey carries himself well and comes off as sincere and honest and is likeable even if you dissagree with him. Downer though for me was this: (Remember now this is the chair of the state's GOP for the last 4 years speaking) In highlighting one of his major successes as head of transportation in Bill Martin's cabinet Cobey told the story how against all odds they kept open the railroad from Hillsboro to Murphy. Norfolk Southern wanted to shut it down, but the Gov said, "shutting it down is not an option." So, what did Bill Cobey do? He followed orders and put meetings together that in the end resulted in state law being changed such that the state government could get in the railroad business and keep the trains running.
