Burlington Industries Grave Marker Re-Dedicated

Once the old Burlington Campus on Friendly is torn down the last significant reminder of the company's presence in the community will be Bur-Mil park with it's brand new aquatic center.

barberrecognizingparksCounty Commissioner Mike Barber just happened to draw the lot as the Guilford County Commissioner to preside over the re-dedication. (Bur-Mil is located in the 7th district).  It's good to be an incumbent.  I give high praise though to Mike for recognizing during his address two fellow candidates running for county commissioner seats; John Parks and this blogger.  It was a class gesture (right).  There was no way I could throw out my quip on offering to buy the park for $1.  I smiled and waved.

After the ribbon cutting, I had a brief chat with Rose Marie Ponton, former city and county Parks and Rec. Commissioner.  I asked her if she thought we would ever see the day again when companies had enough money and spirit to put up company parks all around the county.  She waxed a bit about Springs and Cone Mills then replied "Oh no, never. Those days are gone...Its nice though that we'll have this beautiful park to remember Burlington Industries by."
