Bloodshed in Greensboro: Saturday, November 3, 1979
Recently, a thoughtful editorial appeared in the News & Record: A wound unhealed: Nov. 3 re-examined. Discusses why we must remember the past. Columnist Ed Cone wrote about it in 1999: COMING TO TERMS WITH THE KLAN/NAZI SHOOTINGS: A CITY REMAINS IN DENIAL OVER A TERRIBLE MOMENT IN ITS PAST.
Also, another take on this tragic event between the Communist Workers' Party and a local neo-Nazi and Ku Klux Klan coalition: Red Tide Rising in the Carolinas.
I have met some North Carolinians who espouse the Communist Party line within the Greensboro Peace Coalition. I agree we should not have war with Iraq, and unions should be allowed in NC-but not for all the same reasons.
At the core of Libertarian philosophy is the Golden Rule: Do onto others as you would have them do unto you. This does not exclude the government-the only time when FORCE should be allowed is when you violate another's natural rights to life, liberty, the fruits of their labor, and the pursuit of hapiness.
This is why many of us are opposed to the war
This is why we believe that workers should be allowed to enter into any contract they wish, including a union.
The Golden Rule is not about using FORCE- government force seems to be the core of the Communist Platform. Why do some think that a political elite will free the masses of workers? No one deserves to be a slave, even to the government.
Why do some think that shrinking the government and cutting the bloat will create more big corporate monopolies? Monopolies are the spawn of big government.
Even Communists who espouse force deserve protection of their liberties. Ed Cone aptly points out, "in America everyone is supposed to be able to gather and to expect the full protection of the law. Those are the basic values mocked by the Klan/Nazi shootings and their aftermath."
No matter what we may think about these groups, murder is one crime we must not ignore.
