On Location... Working a bit tonight with the past few day's research into showing the physical direction from one's current location to another site... We've looked at elements can convey a notion of pointing, navigating, or symbolizing a certain direction.
I'd like to take a moment to comment on the Mizrach Plaque, mounted on a wall to show where Jerusalem is, and the mihrab, a hollow space on a wall to show the direction of Mecca. (Noted June 7th.)The idea is that by placing it on the wall one can easily orient oneself to the proper direction. I suppose it also creates a symbolize window or portal, if you will, to the far off area. I've used the vessel form as it enables one to convey a sense of direction. It allows one to place special objects within it, giving it opportunties for meanings. The sail allows for greater amount of text, and can denote speed and energy. The boat, is a popular object to sculpt because of its understood and strong metaphors.
That is not to say that a simple piece of paper with a big arrow drawn on it would not suffice, or something just as straightforward. |
