What Actually Happened
A sequel to my last post.
Sure couldn't have seen this coming!
Things were going slowly, but okay, when the (snail) mail arrived around 4:30 pm. (I thought it was bad enough when it used to come around 2:00, having once upon a time lived where I was the first stop on the route and usually had my mail before 9:00 am! But I'm getting sidetracked...)
One item I pulled out of my mailbox was a notice from the bank saying my account was overdrawn. There was absolutely NO WAY I'd messed up my checkbook. Learned the hard way long ago not to walk away from a checkstand without writing down a debit! And I re-did all my math with the calculator. So what the heck was this?
Tracked it down to the day when I'd accidentally swiped my debit card when I'd intended to put that purchase on my credit card. Without putting in my PIN number, I hit the cancel button and started over with the credit card. Didn't think a thing of it until today when I found out that the transaction had gone through as a debit, even without my PIN number.
Did the cashier do something that messed this up? Thinking back, it was the same cashier at the same store as the only other time I've ever had a debit messed up, only that time I knew immediately that she'd made a mistake—she just couldn't be bothered to fix it. Settled with the manager later. But this time I don't have conclusive evidence...
Got hold of my dad and got some money to cover the overdraft as well as the previously mentioned $40 and made it to the bank just before closing. Fortunately, the "bank" (i.e. the nice young lady who handles this sort of problem) reversed the $25 overdraft fee, which still didn't make up for the original overdraft but at least I'm covered for now. Guess I'll leave it at this IF the same purchase doesn't also show up on my credit card bill. Darned well am not paying twice for one purchase!
Since I'd had to go to the bank anyway, also detoured down to KFC and blew the last cash in my wallet on chicken strips. Not quite the bucket I'd been dreaming of (so no leftovers to live off of for the next few days) but at least it took care of the immediate craving.
So, I'm back home, happily dipping chicken strips in barbecue sauce as I delete viruses from my Yahoo mailbox when...
...the power goes out!
So much for working on the computer. And so much for doing paperwork. At least I could have actually filled in the form by flashlight but trying to track down various bits of needed info would have been next to impossible. Got on the phone and had a good long talk with a friend in Utah instead.
Just about went blind when the lights suddenly came back on! Actually, the lighting in this place leaves a lot to be desired, but after two hours in the dark, it felt like I was staring into the sun.
Since then, I've been catching up on email. And blogging. And now it's bedtime and the lights are flickering again—windy outside—so it's time to shut the computer down again and get some sleep. G'night.
P.S. The yucky smell seems to be coming from the bag of potatoes but I'll deal with sorting through those in the morning.
P.P.S. On the way from the bank down to KFC, passed two accidents less than a block apart on a residential street. How much you wanna bet the second accident happened because somebody was too busy watching the first accident happen?
