Nevada Warms to Nuclear Dump in Utah

Some Nevada politicians see the Goshute nuclear waste site, which is nearing approval, as a potential longterm solution and alternative to Yucca Mountain Project. Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., said the Utah site would ease the rush by the government and nuclear utilities to open a permanent repository in Nevada. Such a site would relieve the pressure to push nuclear waste into Yucca Mountain, Gibbons said.  The NRC is expected to grant the license this month.

Cannon blasts bailout of Weekly World News
The Federal government's attempt to buy the building owned by American Media Inc., publishers of National Enquirer and Weekly World News was condemned by Utah Congressman Chris Cannon, who labelled it a "$20 million buyout" of the conglomerate. Local Florida congressmen want the Feds to purchase the building, which was the site of an anthrax attack in 2001, and clean it up.

Boca Raton Mayor Steven Abrams and County Commissioner Mary McCarty both wrote letters on Monday condemning Cannon's position. Abrams said this was not about AMI, but about protecting South Florida.
