What Would Be Cool: Hydrogen Cars.

Okay kids, time for a little ounce of technology from the Addict. Tie off your arm and get ready for a hit.

On the way home from work today, I went down sixteenth street and sure enough, in the cab stand at a hotel at the corner of 16th and K were a pair of Ford Foci. These were not your regular Ford Focus, these were cars powered by Hydrogen. That's right, your basic old H2.

I love this idea.

However, hydrogen powered cars aren't the final answer. Hydrogen isn't just naturally occurring in the form that we use to fuel these cars. What it takes to make this fuel is electricity. The problem there is that the electricity required to make hydrogen tends to be fueled by fossil fuels, hence eliminating most of the benefits of the whole hydrogen power thing.

But in the western united states, there are other options. For example, Solar Power. My parents already have solar panels on the roof that help drive the hot-water heater in the house. In the Tehachapis there are wind farms that create significant amounts of electricity. Now, imagine being able to use solar power to refine hydrogen to drive your car.

Say, the Feds could give out low-interest loans to those interested in installing solar farms on their roofs for home refining of hydrogen. Win win. Feds get a little cash on the side for encouraging clean energy, which isn't a bad thing at all. Power Companies are also suddenly forced to compete for the industry, which is a good thing.

I know I want my next car to be a hybrid. The question is...can it be a hydrogen hybrid?

...David Selders has a great point on the Books not Bombs rally in CA high schools. If you ditch class for any purpose, your school gets less books and cash. Therefore, your rally just became Bombs, Not Books. Oops.

Ash Wednesday Links

Pondering the insanity of my morning commute and near-assault, I've decided to go Zen this morning, clearing my mind of all emotion and writing carefully and quietly. Today's links will be minimalist in description.
