Twas the Day Before Christmas
It's the day before Christmas, and we're having a non-traditional holiday. We're visiting my parents, and we're at the beach. It's been alot of fun and relaxing so far. It hasn't been very warm, but it's looking like it's going to be a good day today.
I've been reading The Art of Deception by Kevin Mitnick. Jeff bought it for me for Christmas. It's a really good read. The book is about social engineering, how it's carried out, how to recognize it, and how to prevent it. The book is presented as a series of stories about potential social engineering cons. Mitnick analyzes the con and explains how the social engineer was able to carry it out. The stories are also accompanied by tips for educating company employees in ways to spot cons. Well worth reading by anyone, regardless of their corporate position.
I'm now thinking of the whole blog thing in context of social engineering. Blogging could potentially open up a wealth of information to the social engineer. Bloggers tend to record information about where they work, what they are working on, the names of their family members, etc. The problem is that this kind of information is exactly the information that social engineers can use to practice their trade. The book is making me think of security in a whole new way. So, how much do you blog?
I may have even revealed more information than I should have in this entry!
