Longhorn Command Shell ("Monad"). Some people are quite excited about the new command shell Microsoft is planning for Longhorn. [Lambda the Ultimate]

There is a link in this post to a Microsoft Professional Developer's Conference presentation that shows what they are planning for the new command shell. The shell is called MSH (Microsoft Shell). All I can say is thank goodness, and I welcome my Windows bretheren to the beauty of the Unix design philosophy. It only took 20 years, but now that you're here lets all bask in the power of command line management.

Seriously though, the shell does look like a decent programming environment. It's going to be consistent with the rest of .NET, or rather C#, so developers should feel at home. Like the Lamnda poster, I'm not convinced end-users will see any benefit.

In Importing HTML into Excel 97 with Formatting I said I had found an MSDN article that explained how to send HTML to Excel and create a formatted spreadsheet. Well, there is something that's not explicitly mentioned in the article that you need to pay attention to.

If you want to use a formula in your HTML, it is important that you have something between your TD tags. If you have nothing and expect Excel to just insert the value of the formula, you're wrong. Oh Excel 2000 and XP will do that without fuss. However, 97 just ignores your formula alltogether. So, what I'm doing is putting a non-breaking space between my TD tags. This makes Excel recognize there is a formula that needs to update the cell in the table.
