Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Six Questions

Last year I held several retreats with members of the UEN Technical Staff. This was an attempt to understand what was going on in the department and what changes should be made. This year I am again in the mode of wanting to make some changes. These should not be big changes. I certainly do not want to do any reorganizing. That would be bad. The type of changes that I seek are highly leveraged.

Leverage is the idea of making the least, smallest, littlest change that will yield the largest benefit. So, to that end, I'm getting together with every member of the UEN Technical staff over the next month to ask six key questions. These questions are:

  • What shouldn't be changed?

  • How could we better use your talents?

  • Who do you respect in the department? Who is doing it right?

  • Who could be doing a better job?

  • What could I do to make the department better?

  • What is the one change that we should make in the department?

  • Two things I'm working on for 2004. First, developing a culture of team work and getting things done. Second, developing a passion for excellent customer service. It will be interesting and fun to ask these questions and get the reactions. I will use the responses to make changes. Highly leveraged changes...........
