Sometimes it's Tough, But Worth It
The young man sat across the table from me. His mouth was full of Oreo cookie. He held a bottle of water. He sat with his head bent down. I asked how he was. He didn't reply right away. In fact, it seemed that he was struggling for words. He looked away. After a few minutes he looked back up and started talking.
Today the Red Cross is in town accepting blood donations. The Oreos and drinks are provided for those of us who participate. I was manning the refreshment table, handing out T shirts and making sure no one was going away without having an opportunity to get a drink and something to eat. It's best to sit for a couple of minutes before heading to the parking lot. If nothing else, those reclining devices used by the Red Cross really get you tipped back and let the blood flow to your head.
Giving blood isn't the easiest thing to do. I've struggled with it at times. There have been times that, for whatever reason, I've broken into a sweat while hooked up to the needle. Mostly it's psychological. Once I stood up too fast and just about turfed it right in front of a very sympathetic volunteer. Fortunately I was able to compose myself before my head hit the floor.
My new friend introduced himself as Kyle. He admitted that it takes him a few minutes to recover after giving blood. He also let me know that he has a hard time going into hospitals and usually feels light headed just thinking about certain things involving blood, mortality and such. He seemed a little embarrassed. I told him that I completely understand. I've felt the same way a time or two.
I asked Kyle why he took the time when it was so difficult. He said is was because of his Grandmother. She needed a lot of blood in the years before her death and he found the courage then to give blood on a regular basis. Since her passing he has realized the value of the act. So he gives. Even though it makes him uncomfortable. Then Kyle stood up looked around and slowly walked toward the door. He turned, smiled and said good-bye.
I admire Kyle. We are lucky to have people like this live among us. The Red Cross director said that Utah is an exporter of blood to the surrounding states. There are probably a lot of Kyles out there..............
