Mr. Beman was asked about the USGA role in defending the game of golf against illegal equipment. This stemmed from the Ping lawsuit. Historically the USGA has been responsible for setting the rules if the game, including equipment specs, in the United States. The Royal and Ancient Golf Associations fills the same role in Great Britain.

Beman was disgusted with the USGA when that organization decided not to do its job by taking on Ping. He stepped up and put the PGA at risk to do what he thought was the right thing, even though the USGA took the easy out.
