Prednisone
Prednisone is the drug of choice for treating my Lab, Champ. It is a corticosteroid that is widely used to treat disease when nothing else seems to work. Some refer to it as a "silver bullet" in veterinary circles. Others point out the long and short term side-effects.
I thought that since my little buddy Champers is being treated with this steroid that I needed to find out more. I've found some good information and feel that in the short term this is the best route to take. Over the course of the next few weeks we will find out if the effects of his disease have been reversed.
While we wait I've determined to take some other precautions. I've found that similar diseases exist in humans and I've learned a little about how the effects of prednisone can be minimized. So for now I'm giving champ 100 mg of Prednisone a day along with tagamet morning and night and a good multivitamin every day.
I don't know if this will help, but I can't just sit back and wait. It's one thing to trust the vet, quite another to have all the knowledge of the net at my disposal. I'm not content to just sit back and hope. I have to do everything within my power to give Champ the best change to be cured and to make his experience as good as possible.........
