Following the local sports coverage can be frustrating. A person might conclude that the only bicycle races each year are the Tour de France and that's it. In reality there are three major stage races. In May the world's best cyclists gather in Italy to compete over twenty stages of the Giro d'Italia.

Recently Dave Zabriskie, a Utah boy who now lives in California, won the Individual time trial (stage 8) of this year's Giro. I was amazed that there were no mentions of this great accomplishment in either of the local Salt Lake papers or on the Salt Lake radio and television stations. Granted I don't get to catch all local broadcasts but come on, I would have noticed any bit of recognition given to Zabriskie.

Yesterday the Discovery Team leader, Paulo Savoldelli, took over the General Classification lead (overall lowest time) and was able to remain in that position after today's stage. Very exciting stuff considering that Discovery is the only US team on the newly organized UCI Pro Tour. I've been enjoying coverage of the Giro d'Italia on the Outdoor Life Network on the weekends and following the daily results on the web. The best source of information has been the Cycling News web site. Each day their team watches the race and gives a written description that is posted every few minutes. A little weird considering the state of technology today..........
