Maglia Rosa

Paolo Savoldelli is the 2005 Giro d'Italia Maglia Rosa.

I checked on Google. Using the language tools I found that Maglia Rosa translates into "Mesh Rose". I don't think that's the intent in the Giro d'Italia context. The overall Giro leader wears a pink jersey and is known as the Maglia Rosa.

Savoldelli is an Italian riding on the American sponsored Discovery Team. He rode an amazing stage yesterday and defended the Maglia Rosa in the most difficult day of the 2005 race. It was a great performance made all the more impressive because of the lack of support given him by the Discovery team.

Savoldelli is Italian. He is a popular cyclist and is well liked by his fellow pros. That's good, because when it really counted on stage 19 he had no team mates to help him. I've heard it said by some that cycling really isn't a team sport and that it is more based on individual performances. Tell that to Paolo. He rode alone up the Colle delle Finestre, a super difficult climb of 18.5 kilometers with a maximum gradient of 14%. Savoldelli lost 2 minutes 23 seconds to his closest GC rivals by the time he reached the summit.

On the descent and last climb of the day Paolo caught and rode with a group of motivated competitors. They worked together and Savoldelli ended in the GC lead by a slim 28 seconds. What a performance! He deserved the victory that was completed today..........
