I met my wife 20 years ago in Salamanca, Spain, so while my spanish is rusty, I still can follow a conversation or an article. Today in my personalized pubsub newsfeed for oracle-related blog postings, I saw several spanish-language postings like this, this, and this that link to an article in El Mundo entitled 'Blogs' Tambien Patentados ('Blogs' Patented Too).

The article claims that US Patent  6,745,238, filed in March 31, 2000 and awarded to Oracle June 1st, 2004, for a "Self service system for web site publishing" means that we've patented weblogs. Hmmmmmm.....

I know some of the developers that are listed as inventors on the patent, and they work on our Oracle Portal product, which is a highly-customizable, database-driven system for building dynamic websites, so I can see where the patent ideas come from. Other than this online Oracle OmniPortlet Demo that shows how to aggregate RSS news into your portal site built with Oracle Portal, I haven't seen any blog-specific functionality coming out of the Oracle Portal Team in their recent releases. Maybe they have something I don't know up their sleeve?
