The other day, my younger daughter was out on the terrace, watering the plants. Since the temperature has started to rise where we live, she was barefoot, in shorts, and if a little of that cool water got on the toes...all the better. I came back into the kitchen after about 40 minutes and noticed that her plant-watering had turned into a have-fun-with-water-on-a-hot-day playtime event. Trying to be the responsible parent, and without getting upset at her, I mentioned to her that there were children in Africa her age who had to walk a long way just to get a sip of water and that it would be best if she didn't just let the water run like she was doing...
She thought about my public service message for a second, before replying a little bit confused by my advice..."But Daddy, they can't drink this water." She was right. I wasn't sure how to explain that saving water here at home would somehow mean more water for the parched lips of the far-away six-year-old in Africa that she was thinking about. So I just said, "You wanna watch a video? Let's go inside!" And we shut off the water that way...
