I replaced my Samsung flip phone, which I smashed in the car door when it fell off my belt clip, with a Nokia 3588i. I'm very lukewarm to the Nokia, but that's another story. Anyway, I decided I never want to hand-enter dozens of phone numbers again, so before I bought the phone, I made sure a synchronization cable was available, so I could synch with Outlook. At over $30, the cable is grossly overpriced, but at least the synch software was free. I am trying it as we speak. Seems to be working, although the install was tedious, and there was a minor glitch connecting to my work laptop (running Exchange), in which I had to override the program's default Outlook folder assumptions; a novice would have had a hard time with that.

Wow, synching takes a while, though I do have quite a few contacts, and I told it to include all details. So I'm pretty sure an incremental synch would be an order of magnitude faster.

It worked. I see immediately that I need to come up with a way (I can think of several possibilities) to greatly filter my contacts!

One of the many things I love about my new hometown, Woodbury, MN, is the plethora of bike/walking/skating paths. That was one thing I really missed in Indiana, where most people couldn't even spell "walking path" One place I worked, a typical suburban office park, had a very large drainage pond in the middle. Probably over 1 mile in circumference. Such an obvious place to walk around. Do you think they had a path? No, if you wanted to walk around it, you had to walk on the grassy banks, one foot three inches lower than the other. Indiana's state motto could be: Why walk when you can drive?

Gateway is buying eMachines. I like eMachines, so I sure hope that this doesn't end with eMachines going down along with Gateway. Sort of how MCI got pulled down with Worldcom. I haven't been a close observer of Gateway, but my impression has been that Ted Waitt, Gateway's founder, has hung on too long. This deal moves him out of the CEO role, though he will still be chairman.
