Here's a little something that caught my eye. According to Space Today Spanish officials have used their veto to block the release of ?550m for the development of Galileo, a joint venture between the European Union and the European Space Agency to develop a European alternative to the American owned Global Positioning System. Spain is unhappy with the way the contracts are being allocated. This latest setback comes after a disagreement between Germany and Italy on the same matter was finally solved. The EU has said that if the ESA does not resolve the problem soon it will proceed with the project on its own. Under International Telecommunications Union conditions for the use of the radio spectrum allocated to the project, the first Galileo satellite must be in orbit by 2005. [spacetoday.net]
