CLINICAL WLANS
VoIP unwired
Here's a good article published by NetworkWorldFusion about implementation of Voice over IP (VoIP) in cluding medical installations:
At Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg, Ore., IT Director Nancy Laney could have given nurses regular phones or new pagers, but opted for wireless VoIP devices instead. The hospital uses wireless VoIP communications badge appliances from Vocera Communications.
I was disappointed to read SanDisk's problem with producing a SDIO card that could provide wi-fi for Palm devices. To me, the main attraction to have this wireless service for the Treo would be the opportunity to use VoIP. I've read a report by someone who tried an application, GPhone to use VoIP on Sprint's 1xRTT network, but was unsuccessful. The telco's are certainly interested in VoIP. Another news item mentioned that AT&T pays quite a bit in fees to the local baby bells for access, and VoIP would eliminate this cost. And certainly debate is raging with the FCC (courtesy of Werblog)over regulation of this type of access.
(I'll have to find out to what extent GPhone is being used with the Tungsten C. I'd like to hear about anyone's experience with this.)
