AIDS Clinic Counts on Wi-Fi Security

This links to an article on Mobile Health Data describing the use of Wi-Fi at the AIDS clinic at the University of Alabama.

[Programmer and analyst, Ashwin Philar] helped build a wireless network for the clinic using access points from Waltham, Mass.-based Colubris Networks Inc. He chose the Colubris access points because they feature the added security of a built-in virtual private network server. The VPN technology is designed to instruct the access point to reject any connection not originated via a VPN. The technology also offers encryption over each VPN connection.

The clinic also uses the 802.1x wireless security standards on its new network, which enhances the encryption and authentication technologies that come with most 802.11b standard networks. Additionally, the clinic's wireless network management application is accessible only via its hard-wired network, therefore further securing its new wireless network.

The article goes on to say that no pt data is stored on the tablet PCs in use at the clinic.
