While reports of the exact progress of the individual Allied ground forces in southern Iraq are conflicting, what is certain is that several different thrusts are advancing through central and southwestern Iraq.  On the most western side, the 7th Cavalry -- first to the town of Nasiriyah on the Euphrates -- may have actually scurted past Nasiriyah and may be continuing further north along the western side of the Euphrates towards the Karbala Pass, with the aim of approaching it from the west.  At the same time, the 3rd Infantry Division appears to have crossed the Euphrates at Nasiriyah and may be heading up the eastern side of the Euphrates to approach Karbala from the south.   In addition, the 1st Marine Division has left its British counterparts at Basra and is heading toward Baghdad on the Basra road.  But, it too, could be diverted towards Karbala from the east.  What's at Karbala -- a strategic plain leading towards Baghdad.  And now apparently -- up to Six Iraqi Republican Guard divisions.  Analysis based on information from assorted major news sources.
