The main variable which will determine the nature and scope of the battle for Baghdad is whether it will be fought outside the main gates, or inside along the streets. If the US military manages to engage Republican Guard divisions outside the city walls, they will be systematically destroyed. However, if the Republican Guard divisions are pulled back inside the city walls and the city's inhabitants are used essentially as human shields, a siege along with house-to-house fighting might be required. Shock & Awe was designed primarily as a psychological strategy to defeat the enemy's will to fight with minimum effort and maximum effect. Given the lack of signficant capitulation by the regime so far, and the reports of resistance, sometime fierce, its success as a strategy is still unproven.
